BAE Systems designed and built the Type 45 Destroyer, the most advanced ship ever built for the Royal Navy. With all 6 anti-air warfare destroyers now operational, BAE Systems Maritime Services is responsible for providing 24/7 and 365 days a year support to the ‘Daring Class’. This support includes project, engineering and supply-chain management. In addition, there are a number of enhancements and upgrades being designed and fitted to the ships on a continual basis. The Commercial and Estimating Team are responsible for ensuring this support continues to happen, with the right contracts in place, at the right price and when they’re needed.
The Senior Commercial Officer will provide Commercial leadership to bids for upgrades and enhancements to the Type 45 Destroyer through the BAE Systems Prime Contract. Commercial activities include initiating, managing and negotiating multiple changes to contract from Request for Quotation to Acceptance; acting as a point of contact for the customer; applying governance in accordance with the BAE Systems Life Cycle Management & Corporate Commercial Processes, and providing commercial guidance and advice to non-commercial members of the project and production teams. There will also be a requirement to drive continuous improvement in this area. The role will be based in Portsmouth, but require visits to customer sites (Bristol).

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Commercial Officer:
- Prepare bids for additional contractual scope on Type 45 including pricing, terms and conditions, internal approval and final submission to the customer for negotiation.
- Developing and managing the commercial relationship with the customer community across support and upgrade.
- Working with the MoD, Manage the quarterly Contract Amendment process to incorporate contract change into the controlled contract document.
- Ensure sound commercial decisions and strategies are applied which result in margin generation while also protecting the company from excess risk.
- Work closely with the customer and the take the lead on minor negotiations and discussions relating to the bidding activity.
- Develop existing and create new relationships with the customer, partners, and the stakeholder community
- Provide commercial advice to the Type 45 Programme team members in response to specific issues or questions raised increasing their knowledge of commercial practice.
Your skills and qualifications as a Senior Commercial Officer:
- Experience of UK MoD contracts, their associated terms and conditions and pricing methodologies
- Confident at dealing and communicating at all levels of seniority including giving presentations.
- Financial awareness
- Good interpersonal/influencing skills, with the ability to form strong relationships with customers and members of the bid/project team.
- Excellent written/verbal communication and negotiating skills
- Understanding of contract/agreement types and when to use them.
- Ability to provide a commercial input into a dispersed multi-functional team environment.
- Networks actively and effectively to share ideas and best practice.
- Ability to produce innovative commercial solutions with involvement in developing pricing strategies and risk management.
This is a full time role and will be based in Portsmouth.
