Agrivoltaics Gains Momentum as Agriculture and Renewable Energy Converge

Agriculture and renewable energy are increasingly being brought together to address two major challenges: rising food requirements and growing demand for clean electricity. Agrivoltaics offers a practical approach by combining photovoltaic power generation with agricultural production on the same land. Solar panels can be installed above crops or between cultivation areas, allowing farmers to continue agricultural activities while generating electricity. This dual-use model is becoming increasingly relevant as competition for land intensifies and climate conditions place additional pressure on farming systems.

The latest Global Agrivoltaics Market Research Report estimates that the industry was valued at USD 5.12 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 12.49 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 16.02% during 2025–2030. The agrivoltaics industry report highlights climate resilience, land constraints, sustainability requirements, water conservation, and technological advancements as major forces supporting adoption, while Europe remains the leading regional market.

Dual Land Use Addresses Growing Resource Pressure

One of the strongest advantages of agrivoltaics is its ability to use the same land for food production and electricity generation. Conventional solar installations can compete with agricultural land for suitable sites, while traditional farming requires increasingly efficient use of available resources. Agrivoltaic projects can potentially reduce this conflict by allowing both activities to coexist.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes agrivoltaics as the co-location of agricultural production and solar photovoltaic systems and notes that such projects can provide diversified revenue opportunities while reducing competition for land. Its agrivoltaics research and resources also examine crop production, livestock grazing, pollinator habitats, ecological impacts, and economic outcomes associated with dual-use solar installations.

Climate Resilience Strengthens Adoption

Climate change is creating more challenging conditions for farmers through higher temperatures, irregular rainfall, and increasing water requirements. Solar panels installed over agricultural areas can provide shade, potentially reducing evaporation and helping crops retain moisture for longer periods.

The ability to moderate certain microclimatic conditions makes agrivoltaics particularly relevant in regions experiencing heat and water scarcity. The technology does not provide the same benefits for every crop or location, however, making site-specific design and agricultural research important for successful deployment.

Agrivoltaic systems can also support farmers by creating an additional source of income from electricity generation. Depending on the project structure, agricultural producers may benefit from electricity sales, leasing arrangements, or lower energy costs.

Standalone Systems Lead Deployment

Standalone placement represents the dominant segment in the global agrivoltaics industry, accounting for an estimated 65–70% share. These systems are generally deployed in open agricultural fields and can be configured according to crop requirements, panel height, and spacing.

Their flexibility is a key reason for adoption. Panels can be positioned to allow agricultural machinery to operate underneath or between rows, while the spacing and elevation can be adjusted to balance sunlight availability and electricity generation.

The growing deployment of projects in agricultural settings demonstrates how agrivoltaics is moving beyond experimentation toward commercially relevant applications. Projects involving crops such as strawberries and other high-value produce are particularly useful for evaluating how solar infrastructure can coexist with intensive farming.

Solar Expansion Creates a Favorable Environment

The rapid expansion of solar photovoltaic generation is strengthening the broader ecosystem in which agrivoltaics operates. According to the International Energy Agency, global renewable power capacity is expected to increase by about 4,600 GW between 2025 and 2030, with solar PV accounting for nearly 80% of the expansion. For agrivoltaics, expanding solar deployment provides access to established PV technologies while encouraging developers to adapt mounting structures, tracking systems, and panel configurations for agricultural applications.

Technology Improves Agricultural and Energy Performance

Technological innovation is becoming central to agrivoltaic development. Advanced monitoring systems can measure crop conditions, solar output, soil moisture, temperature, and other variables, helping operators optimize both agricultural and energy performance.

Semi-transparent and transparent solar panels may also provide additional design flexibility by allowing different levels of sunlight to reach crops. Meanwhile, modular and portable systems can make agrivoltaic solutions more accessible to smaller and remote farms.

Data-driven management can further improve decision-making by identifying how shading affects crop growth and determining the optimal balance between agricultural productivity and electricity generation.

Europe Remains a Key Development Hub

Europe currently leads the global agrivoltaics industry, supported by strong renewable-energy ambitions, agricultural sustainability initiatives, and growing attention to land-use efficiency. Countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands are exploring different configurations for combining photovoltaic generation with agricultural activities.

The region's development also demonstrates the importance of supportive policy frameworks. Agrivoltaic projects often require coordination among farmers, energy developers, grid operators, regulators, and local communities, making clear rules and appropriate planning essential for wider deployment.

Challenges Require Site-Specific Planning

Despite its growth potential, agrivoltaics faces several challenges. The initial investment can be higher than conventional solar or agricultural infrastructure because systems need specialized structures and designs. Farmers and developers must also evaluate crop compatibility, shading levels, irrigation requirements, equipment access, and electricity-grid connectivity.

Successful projects therefore depend on careful engineering and agricultural planning rather than simply placing solar panels over farmland. Continued research is needed to understand long-term crop yields, financial returns, ecological effects, and the best configurations for different climates and farming systems.

Outlook for Agrivoltaics

Agrivoltaics is emerging as a promising bridge between renewable energy development and agricultural sustainability. By combining electricity generation with crop production, the technology can address land-use pressures while potentially improving resource efficiency and providing farmers with additional economic opportunities.

With the global industry projected to grow strongly through 2030, innovation in panel technology, system design, monitoring, and agricultural integration will remain critical. As renewable-energy deployment accelerates and climate pressures increase, agrivoltaics is positioned to become an increasingly important component of future land-use and energy strategies.
