China Industrial Water Treatment Advances with Manufacturing and Water-Reuse Needs

China’s expanding industrial base is increasing the need for reliable water treatment across power generation, chemicals, electronics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, mining, textiles, and other water-intensive industries. As industrial processes become more complex, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on process-water quality, wastewater management, water reuse, and treatment systems that can support operational reliability while improving resource efficiency.

According to a China industrial water treatment industry report, the sector was valued at USD 18.82 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 20.36 billion in 2026 and USD 32.67 billion by 2032, expanding at a CAGR of 8.2% during 2026–2032. Water treatment equipment accounts for approximately 55.2% of the sector in 2026, while power generation represents the largest end-use segment with a 24.8% share.

Manufacturing Expansion Increases Water Treatment Requirements

China’s extensive manufacturing ecosystem is one of the main factors supporting demand for industrial water treatment. Industrial facilities require water for cooling, processing, cleaning, steam generation, and other operations, while wastewater streams can contain contaminants that require specialized treatment before discharge or reuse.

The country’s high-tech manufacturing sector is also expanding. According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, high-tech manufacturing value added increased by 8.9% year-on-year in 2024. Industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials generally require tighter water-quality controls, increasing the relevance of high-purity water systems, membrane filtration, and advanced purification technologies.

Water Resources Encourage Greater Efficiency

China has substantial water resources, but their geographic distribution is uneven. This imbalance increases the importance of improving water-use efficiency in industrial clusters, particularly in areas where manufacturing activity places significant pressure on available water supplies.

The Ministry of Water Resources estimated China’s total renewable water resources at approximately 3.0 trillion cubic metres in 2024. Against this backdrop, industrial users are increasingly evaluating water reuse, high-recovery treatment, and optimized process-water systems to reduce freshwater requirements.

Industrial water recycling can involve multiple treatment stages, including filtration, membrane separation, biological treatment, disinfection, and advanced chemical processes. The appropriate combination depends on the characteristics of the incoming water and the quality required for reuse.

Equipment Holds a Leading Position

Water treatment equipment represented approximately 55.2% of the sector in 2026, making it the leading offering category. The segment covers filtration systems, membrane systems, disinfection equipment, evaporation and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems, sludge treatment equipment, and other treatment technologies.

Investment in centralized wastewater facilities is also supporting equipment demand. By the end of 2024, 94% of national-level industrial parks had established centralized wastewater treatment facilities, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

Membrane technologies are particularly relevant where industrial facilities require high-quality water or greater recovery rates. Reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and other membrane processes can support water purification and wastewater recycling across different industrial applications.

Power Generation Remains a Major End User

Power generation accounted for approximately 24.8% of the sector in 2026. Electricity-generating facilities require water treatment for applications such as boiler feedwater, cooling systems, condensate treatment, and wastewater management.

China’s large electricity infrastructure creates recurring demand for treatment technologies that can help manage scaling, corrosion, suspended solids, dissolved contaminants, and other water-quality issues. Treatment systems can also support the operational performance of generating assets by improving water quality and reducing problems associated with equipment fouling.

The National Energy Administration provides data and policy information concerning China’s energy system, including the continuing development of electricity-generation infrastructure.

AI Data Centers Introduce a New Water-Management Requirement

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and cloud computing is creating another area of demand for industrial water treatment technologies. Large data centers require continuous cooling, and operators are increasingly considering closed-loop cooling, water purification, and intelligent water-quality monitoring to manage consumption and maintain equipment reliability.

China accounted for the world’s largest share of new data-center capacity additions in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency. The country’s data-center rack capacity also exceeded 8.8 million standard racks in 2024, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

As high-performance computing infrastructure expands, water-management systems may become increasingly important for facilities seeking to balance cooling requirements with resource-efficiency objectives.

Membrane Reuse and ZLD Technologies Gain Attention

Industrial water reuse and Zero Liquid Discharge technologies are emerging as important areas within the sector. ZLD systems are designed to recover water while minimizing or eliminating liquid wastewater discharge, making them relevant to industries facing strict discharge requirements or water-scarcity pressures.

However, advanced systems can require significant capital investment. Membrane-based reuse facilities, advanced oxidation processes, and ZLD installations may be difficult for smaller industrial enterprises to finance. This creates a contrast between the growing need for advanced treatment and the investment capacity required to deploy such systems.

At the same time, improvements in membrane performance and process integration are creating opportunities to reduce energy consumption, improve recovery rates, and make water-reuse systems more practical for industrial users.

Digitalization Supports Smarter Water Management

Digital technologies are becoming increasingly relevant to industrial water treatment. Sensors, automated monitoring, process controls, and data-analysis platforms can help facilities track water quality and treatment performance in real time.

Intelligent monitoring can also support predictive maintenance by identifying changes in pressure, flow, conductivity, or other operating parameters. For large industrial facilities, such capabilities can help improve treatment consistency while providing greater visibility into water consumption and equipment performance.

Industrial Water Management Moves Toward Resource Efficiency

China’s industrial water treatment sector is being shaped by manufacturing expansion, uneven water-resource distribution, stricter environmental requirements, and increasing interest in water reuse. Equipment currently represents the leading offering segment, while power generation remains the largest end-use area.

The growing adoption of membrane systems, advanced filtration, ZLD technologies, and digital monitoring indicates a broader shift from wastewater treatment alone toward integrated water management. As industrial facilities modernize infrastructure, the focus is increasingly moving toward recovering usable water, improving treatment efficiency, and managing water as a strategic industrial resource.
