How Water Security and Irrigation Expansion Are Shaping Pump Demand in Brazil

Brazil’s water infrastructure is being influenced by urban expansion, agricultural irrigation, sanitation investment, and the need to strengthen water security across regions with different climate conditions. Pumping equipment plays an important role in moving water through municipal networks, irrigation systems, wastewater facilities, industrial operations, and large-scale water-transfer projects. At the same time, energy efficiency and solar-powered solutions are creating new directions for equipment adoption.

According to the Brazil water pump market report published by Markntel Advisor, the sector was valued at around USD 1.29 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 1.31 billion in 2026 to USD 1.52 billion by 2032, registering a CAGR of 2.51% during 2026–2032. The study identifies urban water-supply expansion, irrigation development, water infrastructure investment, and the adoption of solar-powered and efficient pumping systems as important factors influencing the sector.

Urban Water Infrastructure Supports Demand

Urbanization is creating continuing requirements for reliable water transmission and distribution. Municipal systems require pumps to move water from sources to treatment facilities, reservoirs, and distribution networks, while wastewater systems depend on pumping for collection, treatment, and discharge.

Brazil’s federal government is directing investment toward water-supply infrastructure. Under the New PAC, 255 water-supply projects were selected across 24 states, with planned investments of R$6.8 billion benefiting 267 municipalities. The Brazilian government’s water-supply program also targets broader access to potable water, creating continuing requirements for pumping, treatment, and distribution infrastructure.

Water Security Encourages Infrastructure Development

Water security is an important consideration because Brazil has significant geographic differences in water availability. Some regions face seasonal or structural shortages, while others must manage flooding and excess water. This creates diverse requirements for storage, transfer, distribution, and drainage infrastructure.

The National Water Security Plan provides an integrated framework for water infrastructure planning, including measures related to droughts, floods, water availability, and regional development. The National Water Security Plan provides a basis for projects involving strategic water infrastructure and regional supply resilience.

Large water-transfer projects can require substantial pumping capacity. In 2025, the Brazilian government announced more than R$400 million for the expansion of a pumping station associated with the São Francisco River Integration Project, demonstrating the scale of infrastructure requirements connected with water transfer.

Irrigated Agriculture Creates a Faster-Growing Application

Agriculture and irrigation are becoming increasingly important sources of water-pump demand. The study projects the agriculture and irrigation segment to expand at a CAGR of approximately 5.20% through 2032, making it the fastest-growing end-user category identified in the report.

Brazil’s large agricultural sector includes regions where rainfall patterns can vary significantly. Irrigation systems can provide greater control over water availability for crops, particularly in areas experiencing irregular precipitation.

The national irrigation policy emphasizes efficient and sustainable water use, agricultural productivity, food security, and the adoption of innovative technologies. The Brazilian National Irrigation Policy also supports modernization and improved management of irrigation systems.

MATOPIBA Expands Pumping Opportunities

The MATOPIBA region, covering Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia, is an important agricultural frontier. Expansion of irrigated agriculture in areas where rainfall can be variable is creating additional requirements for water extraction, transfer, and distribution.

The report identifies MATOPIBA irrigation expansion as a key opportunity for pump deployment. High-capacity centrifugal and submersible pumps can support irrigation systems where reliable water movement is required across larger agricultural areas.

Recent infrastructure development illustrates the scale of this opportunity. In 2025, the Brazilian Development Company of the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valleys reported the start of infrastructure works for additional stages of the Baixio de Irecê irrigation project in Bahia. The project includes R$1.4 billion in planned investment and a 31,500-hectare irrigable area, according to the Brazilian government’s project announcement.

Centrifugal Pumps Maintain a Leading Position

Centrifugal pumps accounted for around 70% of the Brazil water pump market in 2025, according to the study. Their broad use across agriculture, municipal water supply, wastewater management, and industrial processes supports their leading position.

These pumps are suited to applications involving large volumes of water transfer and are widely used where continuous movement of fluids is required. Their relatively broad application range also makes them relevant to Brazil’s diverse water infrastructure requirements.

Positive displacement pumps serve more specialized applications where controlled flow or specific pressure characteristics are required. They are used across industrial processes and selected fluid-handling applications, complementing centrifugal equipment within the broader pump landscape.

Oil and Gas Remains an Important End User

Oil and gas accounted for approximately 16.13% of Brazil’s water pump market in 2025, making it the leading end-user segment during the base year. Pumping systems are used across offshore and onshore operations for applications including water injection, cooling, produced-water handling, and refinery processes.

These environments can require equipment capable of operating reliably under demanding conditions. Corrosion resistance, pressure handling, continuous operation, and maintenance requirements can influence pump selection in oil and gas facilities.

The sector therefore represents a different demand profile from agriculture and municipal water infrastructure, with greater emphasis on specialized equipment and operational reliability.

Solar Pumping Gains Ground in Rural Areas

Solar-powered pumping is emerging as an important trend, particularly in remote rural and semi-arid areas where access to reliable grid electricity can be limited. The report identifies growing adoption of solar pumps for livestock watering, small-scale irrigation, and groundwater extraction.

Solar systems can reduce dependence on grid electricity or diesel-powered equipment in suitable applications. They can also be paired with storage systems so that water can continue to be supplied when solar generation is unavailable.

The trend is particularly relevant to Brazil’s Northeast, where water scarcity and rural infrastructure limitations can create demand for decentralized pumping solutions.

Water and Wastewater Investment Remains Significant

Sanitation infrastructure is another important area of development. Brazil’s federal government reported R$22.1 billion in New PAC sanitation selections during 2025, with total sanitation investments under the program reaching R$61 billion since 2023. This investment supports water supply, sewage, drainage, and related infrastructure.

The Ministry of Cities’ sanitation investment update highlights the continuing scale of infrastructure development, which can support demand for pumps across water intake, treatment, sewage lifting, and distribution applications.

Efficiency Will Shape Future Equipment Selection

Brazil’s water pump sector is increasingly influenced by the need to combine infrastructure expansion with efficient resource management. Urban water-supply projects create demand for high-capacity systems, while irrigation expansion is opening faster-growing applications across agricultural regions.

At the same time, solar-powered pumping, smart utility systems, and efficient equipment are creating new approaches to water movement in remote and resource-constrained areas. Future demand is therefore likely to depend not only on pumping capacity but also on energy consumption, reliability, application suitability, and integration with modern water-management infrastructure.
