India’s Vermicompost Adoption Grows with Organic Farming and Soil Health Focus

India’s agricultural sector is placing greater emphasis on soil health, organic cultivation, natural farming, and sustainable nutrient management, creating a stronger role for vermicompost as an organic soil amendment. Growing adoption of organic farming practices, government-backed programs, declining soil organic carbon levels, and increasing interest in agricultural-waste utilization are encouraging farmers and horticultural producers to incorporate vermicompost into crop-production systems.

A comprehensive market assessment by MarkNtel Advisors reveals that India’s vermicompost market was valued at USD 188.4 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 204.6 million in 2026 and USD 339.7 million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 8.82% during 2026–2032. Solid vermicompost accounts for approximately 85% of demand, while field crops represent around 42% of applications. North India leads the regional landscape with approximately 31% share.

Organic Farming Expansion Strengthens Demand

India’s expanding organic and natural farming ecosystem is creating a sustained demand base for vermicompost. The report notes that 5.975 million hectares had been brought under organic farming through the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) as of December 2024.

Government support is helping farmers access organic inputs. Under PKVY, farmers receive financial assistance for on-farm and off-farm organic inputs, improving the accessibility of compost-based soil amendments. The National Mission on Natural Farming is also expanding the farmer base adopting bio-inputs and alternative agricultural practices.

Soil Health Creates a Strong Application Base

Declining soil organic carbon is another important factor supporting vermicompost adoption. According to the study, 48.5% of nearly 1.3 crore soil samples tested during the 2023–25 testing cycle were low in organic carbon.

Organic carbon plays an important role in soil structure, nutrient retention, microbial activity, and moisture management. Vermicompost can contribute organic matter and nutrients while supporting biological activity in agricultural soils.

The Soil Health Card programme is helping farmers understand soil conditions and receive recommendations for nutrient management. Such diagnostics can encourage more targeted use of organic amendments where soil degradation or nutrient deficiencies are identified.

Solid Vermicompost Maintains Market Leadership

Solid vermicompost represents approximately 85% of the market, making it the dominant product category. Its position is supported by longer shelf life, ease of transportation, established storage practices, and compatibility with conventional agricultural application methods.

Farmers and agricultural-input suppliers can store solid vermicompost in bulk and distribute it through established dealer networks. Its relatively straightforward handling also supports adoption across field crops where large quantities of soil amendments may be required.

Community-based production is strengthening this segment. The report highlights vermicompost production initiatives in Chhattisgarh, where women’s self-help groups have produced substantial quantities of vermicompost and other compost products using locally available cow dung.

Field Crops Remain the Largest Application

Field crops account for approximately 42% of vermicompost demand, reflecting India’s extensive cultivation of rice, wheat, pulses, and other food crops. The scale of field-crop production creates recurring requirements for soil fertility management and organic amendments.

India’s foodgrain production reached a record 353.96 million tonnes in 2024–25, according to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare data cited in the report. This large agricultural base provides substantial potential for organic soil-input adoption.

As growers increasingly focus on soil restoration and reduced chemical dependency, vermicompost can be incorporated into broader nutrient-management programs. Its application can vary according to crop type, soil condition, organic-matter requirements, and local farming practices.

Horticulture Supports Value-Added Products

Horticulture is creating opportunities for liquid vermicompost, vermiwash, enriched formulations, and specialized potting mixes. The report notes that the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture added 1.566 million hectares under horticulture cultivation by July 2025.

Protected cultivation, greenhouses, polyhouses, nurseries, and high-value horticultural production can require more specialized growing media and nutrient-management approaches. Liquid formulations can also be applied through drip irrigation and foliar spraying, providing greater flexibility than conventional solid products.

This trend is creating opportunities for producers to move beyond bulk vermicompost and develop higher-value formulations designed for specific horticultural applications.

Agricultural Waste Creates a Circular Input Opportunity

Vermicomposting also provides a pathway for converting agricultural and organic waste into useful soil inputs. Cow dung, crop residues, food and kitchen waste, municipal organic waste, and other biodegradable materials can serve as feedstocks, depending on production processes and quality requirements.

This circular approach can help connect waste management with agricultural nutrient management. Instead of treating organic residues solely as waste, they can be processed into soil amendments that return organic matter and nutrients to farmland.

The Tripura government’s 2026 Common Facility Centre is one example cited in the report, converting banana pseudo-stems and other agricultural waste into vermicompost, liquid fertilizers, yarn, and biodegradable paper. Such initiatives can create rural-enterprise opportunities while supporting resource recovery.

North India Leads Regional Demand

North India accounts for approximately 31% of India’s vermicompost market. Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan provide a large agricultural base and substantial availability of crop residues and livestock manure.

The region’s rice-wheat cropping system generates significant quantities of agricultural residues that can potentially serve as feedstock for composting and vermicomposting. Growing efforts to manage crop residues more sustainably are also strengthening the connection between agricultural waste and soil-input production.

Punjab’s initiatives to reduce crop-residue burning are particularly relevant. The report notes that in-situ management of paddy straw can generate fertilizer nutrient-recycling benefits while reducing environmental impacts associated with open-field burning.

Fertilizer Subsidies Remain a Competitive Challenge

Despite the positive environment for organic inputs, chemical fertilizer subsidies remain a significant challenge. Subsidized urea, DAP, and NPK products can remain economically attractive to farmers, particularly smallholders, limiting the speed at which some producers shift toward organic alternatives.

The report identifies this situation as both a challenge and an opportunity. The PM-PRANAM initiative provides incentives to states that reduce chemical fertilizer consumption, creating policy support for alternative fertilizers and sustainable agricultural practices.

For vermicompost producers, cost competitiveness remains important. Consistent quality, efficient production, localized feedstock availability, and stronger distribution networks can help improve adoption among price-sensitive farmers.

Vermicompost Production Becomes More Commercialized

The market remains highly fragmented, with the top five players accounting for approximately 25% of total demand. This structure leaves considerable room for regional producers, agricultural cooperatives, farmer producer organizations, and specialized organic-input companies.

Branded vermicompost products and expanding distribution networks are helping formalize the sector. Agricultural-input dealers, direct sales, FPOs, cooperatives, and online platforms are all contributing to wider product availability.

As demand expands, producers may increasingly focus on standardized quality, packaging, certification, feedstock management, and specialized formulations to differentiate their products.

India’s Vermicompost Sector Moves Toward Sustainable Soil Management

India’s vermicompost sector is increasingly connected with organic farming, natural agriculture, soil-health restoration, agricultural-waste utilization, and horticultural modernization. Solid vermicompost remains dominant, while liquid formulations and specialized potting mixes are creating new opportunities in protected cultivation.

Field crops provide the largest application base, while North India maintains the leading regional position because of its extensive agricultural activity and feedstock availability. Government programs supporting organic and natural farming are also creating a more favorable environment for adoption.

Overall, vermicompost is moving beyond its traditional role as a locally produced organic input toward a more organized component of India’s sustainable soil-management ecosystem. Continued government support, better quality standardization, efficient production, and competitive pricing will influence how rapidly its use expands across the country.
