In the first half of 2026, nitrosylsulfuric acid prices in India surged. In Q3, they started to fall.
Ex-Works Dahej prices averaged about USD 249.60/MT in Q4 2025, USD 384.01/MT in Q1 2026 and USD 646.23/MT in Q2. In Q3, the price index fell 8.48%, and the average was about USD 579.82/MT. By September, the price had dropped to about USD 517.99/MT.
The fall followed lower costs for sulphuric acid and sulphur. Even so, Q3 prices are still more than twice the Q4 2025 level.

Why nitrosylsulfuric acid prices matter
Nitrosylsulfuric acid (NOHSO₄) is a highly reactive reagent made from concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum and nitrogen oxides. It is used in:
- Dyestuff manufacturing, especially diazotisation
- Nitroaromatic and specialty chemical intermediates
- Agrochemical intermediates
- Pharmaceutical intermediates
Sulphuric acid and sulphur are the main inputs, so nitrosylsulfuric acid prices follow them closely.
Q3 2026 at a glance
🇮🇳 India (Ex-Works Dahej): about USD 579.82/MT, price index −8.48% vs Q2; September about USD 517.99/MT
🇺🇸 United States: index down on lower feedstock costs and slow spot buying
🇪🇺 Europe: index down on lower feedstock costs and weak industrial demand
How the spike built up
Q4 2025: about USD 250/MT. Sulphuric acid, oleum and inland freight costs went up.
Q1 2026: about USD 384/MT. A four-week maintenance outage, higher sulphur and oleum import costs, and limits on hazardous cargo movements pushed prices up.
Q2 2026: about USD 646/MT. Imported sulphur costs kept rising, Mumbai inventories were thin, and specialised tankers were scarce.
Q3 2026: about USD 580/MT. Feedstock costs eased and demand slowed.
India: why prices fell in Q3
- Sulphuric acid CFR Kandla and elemental sulphur prices fell, which reduced producers’ conversion costs.
- Domestic plants ran steadily, so supply was adequate.
- Producers and distributors held comfortable inventories, and buyers didn’t need to restock urgently.
- Dyestuff, nitroaromatic and specialty chemical makers delayed purchases and used their existing stocks.
- Export enquiries were thin and overseas order books were weak.
- Transport across Maharashtra and Gujarat ran normally, so there was no short-term tightness.
United States and Europe
In the US, the index fell quarter over quarter as sulphuric and nitric acid prices eased and buyers limited spot purchases. Demand from agrochemical intermediates, specialty chemicals and dyes mostly took the form of routine contract call-offs. Export enquiries from Canada and Latin America were quiet.
In Europe, the index also fell. Feedstock costs were lower and demand from dyes, pigments and organic intermediates was weak. Plants ran steadily, inventories were comfortable, and barge logistics in Northwest Europe were smooth.
What this means for buyers
- Feedstock costs are falling. Lower sulphuric acid and sulphur prices are reducing producers’ costs.
- September was well below the Q3 average. Prices fell through the quarter, about 11% below the Q3 average.
- Prices are still high by historical standards. Q3 was about 2.3 times the Q4 2025 level.
- Buyers are using their stocks. When dyestuff makers start restocking, demand could pick up again.
- Supply risks remain. In earlier quarters, outages and tanker shortages caused sharp price jumps.
Questions procurement teams should be asking now
- Do our contracts reflect current feedstock costs, or the Q2 peak?
- How closely do our prices follow sulphuric acid CFR Kandla?
- When are we likely to need to restock?
- Is our supply exposed to tanker shortages or plant maintenance?
