Potassium Chloride Price Rises 5.98% in Indonesia but Falls 8.10% in Germany in Q3 2026 as Global Potash Markets Split

In Q3 2026, potash prices moved in different directions depending on the region.

Potassium chloride (MOP) CFR Jakarta rose 5.98% to about USD 407.33/MT. FOB Hamburg fell 8.10% to USD 370.67/MT. FOB Aqaba was almost flat at USD 361/MT, down 0.28%. In the US, technical-grade KCl delivered to Illinois fell 1.48% to USD 423/MT.

Behind this is a lot of supply. Canadian rail flows have recovered, Jordanian and Canadian exports are steady, and Chinese ports held about 4.15 million tonnes of potash by late September. Each region’s price depends on what its local buyers are doing.

Why potassium chloride prices matter

Potassium chloride is the world’s main potash fertiliser. It is used in:

  • Direct application and NPK compound fertilisers
  • Rice, oil palm and other crops
  • Industrial uses such as potassium hydroxide, drilling fluids and food processing (technical grade)

Because it is traded globally, prices depend on export flows from Canada, Jordan, Germany and Belarus as well as on each country’s planting season.

Q3 2026 at a glance

🇮🇩 Indonesia (CFR Jakarta): USD 407.33/MT, +5.98% vs Q2
🇯🇴 Jordan (FOB Aqaba): USD 361.00/MT, −0.28% vs Q2
🇺🇸 USA (technical, delivered Illinois): USD 423.00/MT, −1.48% vs Q2
🇩🇪 Germany (FOB Hamburg): USD 370.67/MT, −8.10% vs Q2

Indonesia: subsidised distribution kept buying active

  • State-backed distribution through Pupuk Indonesia kept importers buying.
  • In July, maritime-risk premiums encouraged importers to secure prompt cargoes.
  • In August, international replacement costs were higher, while rupiah moves partly offset dollar-denominated import costs.
  • September was softer. Canadian and Jordanian shipments arrived regularly and national stocks grew, so buyers were more cautious on the spot market.

The forecast points to slight easing as more cargoes arrive.

Germany: undercut by cheaper imports

  • Canadian and Jordanian spot cargoes arriving through Rotterdam were cheaper than Hamburg-origin parcels, so sellers cut their export offers.
  • K+S kept its Werra and Zielitz operations running at normal rates, so supply stayed steady.
  • Distributors in France, the Netherlands and Poland used their warehouse stocks and bought little after the harvest.
  • Lower electricity prices reduced production costs, but not enough to offset weaker demand.

The forecast suggests a modest recovery ahead of spring restocking.

Belarusian potash is still affected by EU restrictions. Transit through Klaipėda remains closed, so exports have to use more expensive routes.

Jordan: weaker benchmarks

On FOB Aqaba, prices fell slightly as international potash benchmarks weakened. Arab Potash ran normally, Indian importers already had stock, and Asian buyers were cautious. Exporters had plenty of material and planned shipments actively, so sellers had to follow spot levels.

United States: more stock, less urgency

Delivered prices to Illinois fell 1.48%. Canadian rail congestion eased and Canadian mines ran steadily, so more material reached the Midwest and terminal stocks rose. Growers postponed purchases as crops were well advanced and farm commodity prices were weak. Lower natural gas and transport costs also let wholesalers make small price cuts.

China and India

In China, port inventories reached about 4.15 million tonnes by late September. Compound fertiliser makers delayed autumn purchases and used existing stocks.

In India, prompt offers in Ahmedabad firmed as landed costs and importer risk premiums rose, and distributors increased enquiries ahead of rabi sowing.

What this means for buyers

  1. Supply is plentiful. High Chinese port stocks and steady Canadian and Jordanian exports keep the market well supplied.
  2. Local demand sets the price. Subsidised distribution in Indonesia and rabi buying in India support prices, while post-harvest restraint in Europe and the US weighs on them.
  3. The source of supply matters. Cheaper imports through Rotterdam undercut Hamburg-origin material.
  4. Policy still affects the market. EU restrictions on Belarusian transit continue to raise logistics costs.
  5. Seasonal demand is coming. Rabi sowing in India and spring buying in Europe and the US are the next tests for prices.

Questions procurement teams should be asking now

  1. Are we buying from the cheapest origin for our port?
  2. Should we cover spring needs now, while European prices are weak?
  3. How will Chinese port stocks affect Asian benchmarks?
  4. How much of our landed cost depends on freight and risk premiums?
