I have recently retired from the Standard Bank of South Africa after 40 years in the financial service industry, the last eight being in the regulatory compliance, business continuity/recovery and operational risk management environment. I would like to continue in the business continuity/recovery and operational field on a contract basis, preferably in a consultative/facilitation role. Prior to my retirement, I was the Business Risk Manager for two business areas within Standard Bank’s Personal and Business Banking (PBB) retail banking network namely, Specialised Shared Services and Fraud Risk and Loss Management. My responsibly was to ensuring that the seven business units (covering some 520 staff) within the afore business areas were compliant with and aware of their relevant regulatory obligations; their audit findings were dealt with effectively; their operating environment and operational risks were understood (e.g. risk assessments, key risk indicators, reporting of breaches and exposures/losses, etc. were in place); they knew their business priorities, single points of failure and that each area had a workable and tested business continuity/recovery plan in place. I was also instrumental in developing (and obtaining buy-in from all appropriate stakeholders) a coordinated emergency/incident management plan for Standard Bank’s Johannesburg Campus (this emergency/incident management plan has become the blue print for the Bank’s 9 provincial offices as well as its African operations). Because of the function performed by some business units, I was a committee member of the PBB monthly Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Committee, as well as convener/secretary for both the quarterly Business Operations Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Committee and quarterly Emergency/Incident Team Committee. In addition, I was also approached to care take another business area for five months (namely Procurement and Logistics), while another Business Risk Manager was being recruited.
