Costs Up Everywhere: Why TBHQ Prices Rose Across Every Major Market in Q3 2026

Most consumers have never heard of tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), but they eat it regularly. This synthetic antioxidant stops edible oils, snack foods, instant noodles and packaged foods from going rancid. Only a small amount is needed, it holds up at high temperatures and it doesn’t discolor food. It is also used in biodiesel and resins.

TBHQ is made from hydroquinone, which comes from benzene, through a reaction with isobutylene. This makes its price sensitive to petrochemical feedstocks and energy costs. In Q3 2026, both of those rose in every major market.

A year in review

Over the last four quarters, the three markets went from moving in different directions to moving together:

  • United States: Prices rose in all four quarters, from Q4 2025 through Q3 2026.
  • China: Prices fell in Q4 2025 as phenol feedstock costs dropped, then rose for the next three quarters.
  • Germany: Prices fell in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 because of weak orders and lower benzene and phenol costs, then rose in Q2 and Q3.

Q3 2026 was the second quarter in a row in which all three markets rose. In each region, the main driver was cost rather than demand.

United States: tight feedstocks and steady demand

US prices rose in Q3 as producer prices climbed 6.3% year-over-year in September. Isobutylene, a key raw material, stayed expensive through August. C4 stream supply also tightened in August, while crude oil prices rose and global oil inventories kept falling. Tert-butyl alcohol prices rose in September as well, adding more pressure.

Demand held up. Industrial production grew 2.2% in September, and retail sales were 6.3% higher than a year earlier, which supported demand from food processors. The main weak spot was consumer confidence, which fell to 81.9 in September.

China: rising hydroquinone costs and stronger manufacturing

China’s price index rose in Q3, averaging about USD 6,000/MT FOB China. Producer prices rose 5.0% year-over-year in September, and hydroquinone prices have risen steadily throughout 2026. Higher crude oil prices in August and rising global commodity prices in September added to these costs.

Industrial demand was firm. Manufacturing expanded in September, and industrial production grew 5.5% year-over-year. New products in China’s functional food and beverage market also supported demand. Consumer spending was weaker, with inflation at only 0.9% and retail sales growth at 1.1% in September.

Germany: the strongest cost pressure

Germany had the largest increase in costs. Industrial producer prices rose 8.7% year-over-year in September, the highest of the three markets, and natural gas prices reached a three-year high during the quarter. Supply problems in Asia also sent some buyers to German producers, which supported spot prices.

Demand was weaker. Consumer confidence fell to -14.5 in September, and retail sales dropped 0.4% in August. Industrial production rose slightly, by 0.4% in August, and unemployment stayed at 4.3%. As with many German chemicals this year, prices rose because of costs, not demand.

What this means for buyers and producers

1. This is a cost-driven market. In every region, producer prices, feedstocks and energy pushed TBHQ higher. Strong demand was not the main cause.

2. Watch the feedstock chain. Benzene, phenol, hydroquinone and isobutylene are the inputs that matter most. Problems in C4 streams or rising hydroquinone prices reach TBHQ quickly.

3. Energy costs differ by region. With natural gas at a three-year high, German production costs are well above those in the US and Asia. This affects which suppliers are competitive.

4. More increases are likely. ChemAnalyst’s outlook for all three regions points to further upward pressure. Food and feed manufacturers should consider buying ahead or securing contracts now.

Conclusion

TBHQ makes up a small share of a food product’s cost, but it is essential, and buyers can’t easily switch it out when prices rise. With feedstock and energy costs climbing in every region, procurement teams should plan carefully. That means following the hydroquinone and isobutylene markets, buying from more than one region where possible, and timing contracts before the next increase.
