In today’s time, kiwis are no longer just an ordinary fruit; they have established a strong identity in the global agricultural sector. Increasing health awareness, changing dietary habits, and the growing need for nutritious food have made this fruit popular in international markets. Earlier, kiwis were limited to certain regions, but now they are easily available everywhere—from large supermarkets to online platforms. In India too, farmers are shifting from traditional crops to kiwi cultivation, as it offers stable demand and better income opportunities.

Global Importance of Kiwis

Kiwis are now widely known as a “superfood.” They contain more vitamin C than oranges and are rich in fiber, potassium, and antioxidants. They are highly beneficial for heart health, digestion, and skin care.

Today, people in developed countries such as Europe and the United States are including kiwis in their daily diet. In Asia as well, their popularity is increasing rapidly. The best part is that people of all age groups—from children to the elderly—enjoy this fruit. This is why its demand continues to grow every year.

Key Reasons Behind the Rising Demand for Kiwis

There are several social and economic factors driving the demand for kiwis. The biggest factor is growing health awareness. People are moving away from junk food and choosing nutrient-rich fruits.

Another important factor is the increasing demand for organic and natural products. Consumers prefer fruits grown with minimal chemical use, and kiwis fit perfectly into this category.

The third reason is the increased demand for immunity-boosting foods after COVID-19. During this period, kiwi sales saw a significant rise. Additionally, kiwis are now being included in fitness and diet plans, further boosting their popularity.

Position of Kiwis in the Global Market

Kiwi production is concentrated in a few countries such as New Zealand, Italy, China, Chile, and Greece. These countries have strengthened their position in the global market through modern techniques, scientific farming, and strong supply chains.

New Zealand is especially a leader in kiwi exports, with companies branding and selling high-quality fruits worldwide. China leads in production, while European countries excel in quality and exports.

Their success shows that with the right technology and strategy, kiwi farming can be highly profitable.

Current Status of Kiwi Farming in India

In India, kiwi cultivation is still in its early stages but is expanding rapidly. It is successfully grown in hilly states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.

India’s diverse climate is suitable for kiwi production, especially in cold and temperate regions. With the right variety and techniques, India can establish a strong presence in the global market.

Benefits of Kiwi Farming for Farmers

Kiwis cultivation offers several benefits to farmers. First, it has a higher market price compared to many other fruits, confirming better income.

Second, it is an export-oriented crop. Due to its demand in international markets, farmers can sell their produce abroad and earn higher profits.

Third, kiwis have a longer shelf life. They can be stored for extended periods, allowing farmers to sell them at better prices when market conditions are favorable.

Growing Export Opportunities

India has several large markets for kiwi exports. Middle Eastern countries, such as Dubai, are major consumers of Indian fruits. Additionally, demand is increasing in Europe, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Southeast Asia.

To succeed in exports, it is essential to focus on quality, packaging, and logistics. With proper coordination between farmers and traders, India can become a major player in kiwi exports.

Steps to Boost Exports

Improving quality is the most important step for increasing exports. Only fruits that meet international standards in size, taste, and nutrition can succeed globally.

Attractive and secure packaging is also imporatant. Developing cold storage and cold chain logistics plays a key role in maintaining freshness.

Both the government and private sector need to work together to connect farmers with markets effectively.

Challenges Faced by Farmers

Although kiwi farming has great potential, it also comes with challenges. The biggest issue is the lack of technical knowledge. Many farmers fail to achieve good yields due to improper methods.

The second challenge is high initial investment, as plants, support systems, and maintenance require significant costs.

The third issue is market access. Small farmers often struggle to find buyers and end up selling their produce at lower prices.

Solutions and Improvements

These challenges can be addressed effectively. Farmers need training and access to modern techniques. Agricultural universities and government institutions can play an important role in this.

The government should provide subsidies and schemes to encourage farmers. Additionally, farmers can form groups for collective farming and exports, reducing costs and increasing profits.

Future Prospects of Kiwis

The demand for kiwis is expected to grow even more in the coming years due to rising population, changing lifestyles, and increased health awareness.

The trend of organic and natural farming also favors kiwi cultivation. If India takes the right steps at the right time, this fruit can significantly boost farmers’ income.

Inspiration for Farmers

Today, many Indian farmers are earning well through kiwi cultivation. By adopting modern techniques, they have improved their livelihoods.

This serves as an inspiration for farmers who want to move beyond traditional farming. With proper knowledge and hard work, kiwi farming can become a successful business.

Final Opinion

The global demand for kiwis and export opportunities present a golden chance for Indian farmers. It is not just a fruit but a symbol of transformation in agriculture.

If farmers adopt modern techniques, the government provides support, and proper market access is confirmd, kiwi farming can bring a new agricultural revolution in India.

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…
