If you are interesting in Information Risk Management then you should not miss the opportunity to ask your questions to the panel of experts at the major IT GRC conference.

I'm going to attend the IT-GRC conference in Lisbon next week and will be coordinating a panel of experts on Information Risk management.

I am opening this forum to ask for the questions you wish to be asked to the panel members. I will do my best to pose these questions and report the responses back to our community.

  • Definitely interested in knowing more about IT-GRC protections with the advancing Cloud and resulting risk aversion strategies. I personally have little faith in the majority of "in-place" (legacy) systems to monitor such areas at the present. And that's just for current data and resulting breaches that have become too common in the past few years.  I have not witnessed any definable strategies with the ever-burdensome demands required through DFA, BASEL changes, so let's have some feedback. Thanks.
  • Sorry - typing error. I mean Pillar 3 disclosures of course (incl. disclosures about the Pillar 2 internal stress tests)

    Thanks,

    Hi Boris,

Maybe not completely on the topic question, but I'd like to hear the opinions of the (Informational) Risk Management experts in the following: What / How detailed information could and should the banks make public about their true risk exposures (in all risk areas, from informational risk management perspective)?

Obviously, the information disclosed in current Pillar 2 reports has been insufficient for market participants to understand the true risks in banking sector. Furthermore, complex calculations make the understanding of risks even more difficult; what is needed, is more raw data so that the analysts can analyse it by themselves. (The obscurity may have quite catastrophic consequences starting from funding & liquidity. We see it right now in Europe.)

  • Dear Boris,

my question is in regards to Information Risk and the Basel III Framework which will be rolled out across the Banking sector over the coming years.

At the moment the sector seems to look at Basel III as an area purely for Credit or Liquidity Risk but as the sheer scale of the framework hits home the sector will need to ensure that IT systems, data retrieval, etc can keep up pace.

As each financial institution will need to provide evidence that all executives, directors and department heads can demonstrate "fit and proper" knowledge to retain their banking licences it would be interesting to understand if Information Risk Managers are even aware of Basel III let alone if they understand the scope of work they'll need to undertake in the future.

  • what are the risks in opting for cloud computing?? its becomming popular due to low investment cost, and easy usability but some reports say that the data is exposed for some time and its matter of time that there will be technology to capture it in that span. how to protect the data frm this?

If risk management is about decision making, are current risk management solutions irrelevant?

Now that the updated COSO and ISO risk management standards emphasize a connection to enterprise objectives and decision making, does this mean ERM and GRC solutions focused on risk registers and regulatory compliance are missing the true value of risk management? Will current risk management solutions evolve to integrate more decision support functionality or will standalone prescriptive analytics and other technology solutions take a more prominent role in enabling risk-informed…

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…

Plunging oil prices: curse or blessing in disguise?

The recent sudden crash of oil prices has had a major impact on the world economy, leading to many troubled faces in the international arena. The Russians fear the effects of yet another powerful hit on their economy, Venezuela seems to be considering default and the Americans are weary of the consequences for its young and emerging shale oil industry. And then you have the Middle East, where the smallest match is enough to ignite the largest fire. But are these worries really justified or…
