AI-enabled OCT software can assist with the assessment of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and glaucoma. Depending on the software's intended use and regulatory status, it may help detect image features, quantify retinal structures, compare scans over time, or prioritize cases for further evaluation.

However, AI does not replace the need for appropriate clinical judgment. Performance can vary with image quality, patient populations, disease prevalence, OCT device characteristics, and the data used to develop and validate an algorithm.

For healthcare providers and technology companies, the central commercial opportunity is to deliver reliable software that fits existing imaging workflows and demonstrates meaningful clinical or operational value. IG Transformation Partners provides market intelligence for businesses evaluating industry developments, competitive dynamics, and emerging technology opportunities.

The OCT AI software market report is the relevant starting point for examining the market through a structured industry research perspective.

Market Overview and Definition

The OCT AI software market includes software applications that use artificial intelligence to interpret, analyze, quantify, or support clinical assessment of images generated by optical coherence tomography systems.

OCT uses light-based imaging to produce detailed cross-sectional representations of tissue. In ophthalmology, it is widely used to examine retinal layers, the macula, and the optic nerve. AI software can process these images to identify anatomical structures, measure abnormalities, compare examinations, and assist with disease assessment.

The market may include standalone software, integrated AI modules supplied with OCT systems, cloud-based image analysis platforms, and software services used by hospitals, eye clinics, diagnostic centers, and research institutions.

Depending on the research scope, OCT AI software can also include applications beyond ophthalmology. OCT technology is used in certain cardiovascular applications, including intravascular imaging, where AI-enabled software may support image interpretation and measurement. These applications should be distinguished from retinal OCT because their clinical workflows, customers, and regulatory requirements differ.

The main market participants operate across several categories:

  • OCT equipment manufacturers developing integrated image analysis capabilities.

  • Independent software developers building AI algorithms for ophthalmic imaging.

  • Medical technology companies acquiring or partnering with specialist AI businesses.

  • Healthcare providers purchasing software licenses or subscribing to imaging platforms.

  • Research organizations developing and validating AI methods for clinical applications.

  • Cloud and health IT providers supporting image storage, processing, and workflow integration.

An important distinction is that conventional OCT image analysis software is not necessarily AI software. The market should include only products and services that meet the selected study's definition of AI-enabled OCT analysis.

Market Size, Share, and Forecast

The market's commercial outlook depends on the adoption of AI-assisted image analysis, the installed base of compatible OCT systems, the volume of ophthalmic examinations, and the availability of clinically validated applications.

The specific global market size, forecast value, and CAGR for the supplied IGTPS report could not be independently verified from the accessible report information. Accordingly, no global valuation or growth rate is presented here as a confirmed figure.

A defensible market forecast should distinguish between global OCT AI software revenue, regional revenue, integrated software sales, standalone licensing, cloud subscriptions, and associated services. It should also identify whether cardiovascular OCT applications are included.

The official IGTPS website provides related regional research with separately defined scopes. For example, its Europe OCT AI Software Market report reports a 2025 market value of USD 0.42 billion and projects USD 1.10 billion by 2034, with a CAGR of 11.2% for 2026 to 2034. These figures relate specifically to the Europe report and must not be treated as global market estimates.

For decision-makers, the most useful market indicators include software revenue, adoption among compatible OCT installations, the proportion of examinations analyzed using AI, recurring software revenue, clinical validation progress, and the availability of reimbursement or procurement support.

Market share analysis should likewise distinguish between OCT equipment manufacturers with integrated software, independent AI vendors, and companies supplying broader ophthalmic imaging platforms. These categories overlap, so a clear definition is necessary to avoid double counting.

Key Market Trends and Developments

Automated retinal layer segmentation

Retinal layer segmentation is an important application of OCT AI software. Algorithms can identify boundaries between retinal structures and help quantify thickness or other anatomical measurements.

Automation can improve consistency and reduce manual measurement effort. It can also support longitudinal comparisons, helping clinicians assess changes across multiple examinations. However, segmentation errors can occur in low-quality scans or in eyes affected by advanced disease, unusual anatomy, or imaging artifacts.

AI-assisted retinal disease assessment

AI models can analyze OCT features associated with several retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. Depending on their intended use, these tools may identify fluid, quantify anatomical changes, or assist with the classification of imaging findings.

The FDA's review documentation for the Notal Vision Home OCT System provides a concrete example of AI-based OCT image analysis. The system is intended to help visualize and quantify selected retinal fluid-related features in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration between scheduled clinic assessments. It is not intended to replace standard examinations or independently make treatment decisions.

Longitudinal monitoring and quantitative analysis

OCT examinations often generate repeated measurements over time. AI software can help compare scans, track structural changes, and organize longitudinal imaging data.

This capability is relevant to chronic retinal conditions requiring regular monitoring. Consistent image registration, measurement reliability, and appropriate handling of differences between scanners are important for meaningful comparisons.

Cloud-based image analysis

Cloud-based systems can enable centralized image processing, remote access, and software deployment across multiple clinical locations. These capabilities may be valuable for healthcare networks managing large volumes of OCT examinations.

Adoption depends on data protection, cybersecurity, internet reliability, integration with clinical systems, and the operational costs of storing and processing medical images. Some providers may prefer local or hybrid deployment models for greater control over sensitive data.

Integration with clinical workflows

Healthcare providers increasingly evaluate AI tools based on their fit with existing diagnostic and treatment processes. Software that integrates with imaging workstations, electronic health records, clinical reporting systems, and practice management tools may be easier to adopt than a disconnected application.

Vendors must demonstrate that AI outputs are understandable, accessible at the appropriate point in the workflow, and useful for clinical decisions rather than simply adding another software interface.

Growing emphasis on clinical validation

Clinical validation is central to the development of medical AI. A model's performance in an internal research dataset may not predict how it will perform across different populations, equipment types, and clinical settings.

Developers are therefore expected to evaluate their systems in appropriate populations and intended-use environments. Regulatory requirements depend on the product, claims, and jurisdiction, making documented validation an important commercial consideration.

This regulatory framework is relevant to vendors planning commercialization in the United States.

Development of home monitoring

Home OCT technologies create opportunities for monitoring selected patients between scheduled clinic visits. These approaches may help collect additional information about disease activity while reducing dependence on clinic-based imaging alone.

Home monitoring requires reliable image acquisition, appropriate patient training, secure data transfer, and clear procedures for clinical review. It is best understood as a complement to professional care rather than a universal replacement for clinic examinations.

Investment in ophthalmic technology

OCT equipment manufacturers and healthcare technology companies have incentives to improve their software offerings, differentiate their systems, and strengthen customer relationships. AI features can support this strategy when they improve the clinical utility of existing imaging equipment.

Partnerships and acquisitions may also help equipment manufacturers access specialized algorithms and shorten software development cycles. The commercial results depend on integration quality, product compatibility, and the evidence supporting the acquired technology.

Market Restraints and Challenges

Dependence on image quality

OCT AI algorithms depend on the quality of the images they analyze. Motion artifacts, segmentation errors, poor signal strength, and inconsistent acquisition protocols can affect output reliability.

Healthcare providers need image-quality controls and procedures for identifying scans that are unsuitable for automated analysis.

Differences between OCT devices

OCT systems can differ in imaging characteristics, resolution, acquisition protocols, and proprietary file formats. An algorithm developed for one device or dataset may not perform equally well across other systems.

Cross-device compatibility and external validation are important considerations for vendors seeking to serve a broad customer base.

Clinical validation and regulatory requirements

Medical software may be subject to regulatory requirements when its intended purpose falls within the relevant medical device framework. The classification and evidence requirements depend on the claims, functionality, and jurisdiction.

Developers must plan for validation, technical documentation, quality management, risk assessment, and post-market monitoring where applicable. Regulatory approval or authorization should never be assumed solely because a product incorporates AI.

Data privacy and cybersecurity

OCT images and associated clinical records can contain sensitive health information. Cloud-based analysis introduces requirements for secure transmission, access controls, retention policies, and appropriate data processing arrangements.

Healthcare organizations may also need to evaluate vendor security practices and ensure that software deployment aligns with applicable privacy and health information requirements.

Procurement and integration costs

The total cost of adopting OCT AI software may include licenses, subscriptions, hardware compatibility, integration, training, support, and ongoing maintenance.

Smaller clinics may have limited budgets or insufficient examination volumes to justify some platforms. Vendors need to demonstrate value in terms of workflow efficiency, measurement consistency, clinical usefulness, or other clearly defined outcomes.

Risk of overreliance on automated outputs

AI systems can produce incorrect classifications or measurements. If clinicians interpret automated outputs without considering image quality, patient history, and clinical findings, errors may affect care.

Human oversight, clear uncertainty communication, and appropriate escalation procedures are essential when software supports consequential clinical decisions.

Market Opportunities and Future Outlook

The future of the OCT AI software market will depend on whether vendors can transform research advances into dependable clinical products.

One promising opportunity is disease-specific software that supports well-defined tasks, such as fluid quantification, retinal thickness measurement, or the monitoring of selected structural changes.
