When one compromised package can spread malicious code to hundreds of downstream products, knowing what is inside your software and hardware is a business necessity. The supply chain security market was valued at USD 2.8 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 7.2 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 11.1% from 2026 to 2034.

This article explores the regulatory pressure, technology shifts, segment leaders, and competitive moves shaping the market, with practical implications for security leaders, software producers, device makers, and investors.

Regulation Turns Transparency Into Obligation

Buyers and regulators now expect suppliers to show what their products contain. U.S. federal buyers expect attestation to the NIST Secure Software Development Framework, the EU Cyber Resilience Act applies to products with digital elements, and the FDA requires SBOMs in premarket submissions for cyber devices under Section 524B.

From September 11, 2026, manufacturers selling products with digital elements in the EU must report actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe incidents under Regulation (EU) 2024/2847, with fines of up to EUR 15 million or 2.5% of worldwide annual turnover for non-compliance. Most other obligations apply from December 11, 2027. In the United States, Executive Order 14415, signed on July 20, 2026, directs the Department of War to require defense contractors to submit indentured bills of materials tracing components, software, and materials back to their origin.

Attacks Raise Board-Level Attention

Attacks on open-source registries show how one compromised maintainer account can spread malicious code widely. The npm worm campaign of September 2025 affected more than 500 packages and drew a CISA alert. Fast growth in AI-assisted coding and open-source reuse increases the number of third-party components in each application, which raises demand for automated inventory, scanning, and patching.

Trend: SBOMs, AI-BOMs, and Prevention-First Controls

Buyers are moving from static component lists to signed, machine-readable SBOMs, build provenance, and runtime checks that link what was built to what is running in production. CycloneDX and SPDX remain the main formats. CISA, the NSA, the FBI, and international partners released the 2026 Minimum Elements for a Software Bill of Materials, replacing the 2021 NTIA baseline and adding elements such as author signature, SBOM version, and component hash.

Vendors are also adding AI bills of materials, package firewalls, and malicious-package blocking to cover AI models, coding assistants, and developer extensions.

Segment Highlights

Software supply chain security led by type in 2025 because most attacks and compliance demands center on code, packages, and build pipelines. Hardware and firmware security is projected to grow fastest as bill-of-materials expectations extend to connected devices and components. Dragos completed its acquisition of NetRise in September 2026 to add firmware visibility.

Software platforms were the largest component, while services are expected to grow fastest as organizations need help with SBOM programs and Cyber Resilience Act readiness. Cloud deployment led, with hybrid projected to grow fastest among defense, financial, and critical infrastructure users. Risk and vulnerability management was the largest application, and SBOM and software composition management is projected to grow fastest.

Regional Outlook

North America held 38% of the market in 2025, supported by federal procurement rules, FDA requirements, and many leading vendors. Europe accounted for 27%. Asia-Pacific is projected to grow fastest, helped by guidance in Japan and India. India’s CERT-In issued version 2.0 of its technical guidelines in July 2025 covering SBOM, AI-BOM, and hardware BOM, and lists 21 minimum data fields for SBOMs.

Competitive Landscape and Deal Activity

The market is fragmented, with JFrog, Chainguard, Cycode, Socket, Endor Labs, ReversingLabs, Aikido Security, Apiiro, Snyk, Mend.io, and others competing alongside application security and cloud platforms. Consolidation is visible: Google completed its USD 32 billion Wiz acquisition on March 11, 2026, Socket acquired Secure Annex on April 28, 2026, Aikido acquired Root on June 30, 2026, and JFrog announced a Wiz integration on September 2, 2026.

Opportunities for Stakeholders

Many mid-sized manufacturers lack skills to produce and maintain SBOMs, creating room for managed SBOM and compliance-as-a-service offerings. Connected devices, medical equipment, and industrial controls remain under-served. Automated remediation is attracting acquisitions. Buyers should prioritize signed SBOMs, developer-friendly workflows, and coverage of regulatory requirements.

Conclusion: From Visibility to Verified Assurance

The supply chain security market is maturing from scanning toward continuous assurance across code, packages, firmware, and suppliers. As regulations tighten and attacks target developer tools, organizations that build transparency into engineering workflows will be better protected and better prepared for audits.

If risk management is about decision making, are current risk management solutions irrelevant?

Now that the updated COSO and ISO risk management standards emphasize a connection to enterprise objectives and decision making, does this mean ERM and GRC solutions focused on risk registers and regulatory compliance are missing the true value of risk management? Will current risk management solutions evolve to integrate more decision support functionality or will standalone prescriptive analytics and other technology solutions take a more prominent role in enabling risk-informed…

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…

The Russians fear the effects of yet another powerful hit on their economy, Venezuela seems to be considering default and the Americans are weary of the consequences for its young and emerging shale oil industry. And then you have the Middle East, where the smallest match is enough to ignite the largest fire. But are these worries really justified or…
