Water Infrastructure Leads Demand

Water and wastewater utilities need accurate flow data for billing, leak detection, and loss reduction, and meters are used from treatment plants to household connections. Government programs reinforce this. India’s Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 was extended to December 2028 with an outlay of Rs 8.69 lakh crore to provide tap water to all 19.36 crore rural households, and the European Commission’s Water Resilience Strategy of June 2025 targets at least a 10% improvement in water efficiency by 2030 through smart metering and leakage reduction.

Process industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, power, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals rely on flow meters for batch control, safety, energy monitoring, and custody transfer, while quality and emissions reporting rules keep measurement requirements strict.

Industry Performance Signals

Leading suppliers report healthy demand. Endress+Hauser reported 2025 net sales of EUR 4.01 billion, up 7.2%, with growth helped by the addition of SICK’s gas analysis and gas flow measurement range. Badger Meter reported record 2025 net sales of USD 916.7 million, up 10.9%, with software-as-a-service sales of about USD 74 million, up 27%. In January 2026, Puerto Rico’s water authority selected its ultrasonic meter and cellular AMI solution for 1.6 million service connections.

Trend: Smart, Self-Diagnosing Meters

Manufacturers are building diagnostics directly into flow meters so users can detect coated electrodes, empty pipes, and sensor drift early and verify meter health without stopping the process. Embedded IoT connectivity, cellular communication, and cloud analytics turn meters into data sources for predictive maintenance and digital twins. Protocols such as HART, PROFIBUS, Modbus, and Ethernet-based networks, with the NAMUR NE 107 diagnostic classification, link field devices to control systems.

Product launches reflect this. Emerson introduced its Rosemount 9000 Series magnetic flow meters with built-in Smart Meter Verification, and ABB announced a major upgrade in June 2026 to its ProcessMaster FER620 electromagnetic family, with embedded IoT connectivity for harsh and low-flow water applications.

Segment Highlights

Electromagnetic meters led by product type in 2025 because they handle conductive and corrosive liquids with high accuracy and little maintenance. Ultrasonic meters are projected to grow fastest, driven by non-intrusive clamp-on devices and their use in cellular smart water networks.

Liquids were the largest fluid category, while gases are expected to grow fastest with wider use of natural gas, LNG, biogas, and hydrogen. Inline installation led, and clamp-on and non-intrusive meters are set to grow fastest because they mount without shutdown or leak risk. Water and wastewater was the largest end-use industry, whereas semiconductor and electronics manufacturing is projected to grow fastest as fabs need precise measurement of ultrapure water, chemicals, and specialty gases.

Regional Outlook

Asia-Pacific held 43% of the market in 2025 and is also projected to grow fastest. China leads through large water, chemical, power, and LNG projects, India adds demand through Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, and Japan and South Korea focus on high-precision meters for semiconductors. North America accounted for 26%, with demand driven by replacement of aging water, oil and gas, and power infrastructure, custody transfer under API MPMS and AGA standards, and smart-water programs.

Competitive Landscape

A small group of global companies, including Emerson, Endress+Hauser, Siemens, ABB, Yokogawa, KROHNE, Honeywell, Badger Meter, and Fuji Electric, hold strong positions, while specialty and regional manufacturers serve niche applications. Competition increasingly turns on diagnostics, connectivity, lifetime service, and complete solutions rather than price alone.

Opportunities for Suppliers and Utilities

Cellular and fixed-network smart metering programs create large multi-year orders and a recurring base for data services. New measurement needs in LNG, hydrogen, biogas, carbon capture, and semiconductor fabs favor Coriolis, thermal mass, and ultrasonic suppliers. Software subscriptions, remote monitoring, and meter verification services can improve margins and retention.

Conclusion: Measurement Becomes a Data Service

The flow meters market is growing steadily as water programs, industrial automation, and digital diagnostics expand. Suppliers that pair accurate hardware with connectivity, software, and service will capture more lifetime value as the market heads toward USD 16.4 billion by 2034.

Flow Meters Market FAQs

What are flow meters?
They are instruments that measure the volume or mass of liquids, gases, and steam moving through pipes or channels.

How large is the flow meters market?
It was valued at USD 9.7 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 16.4 billion by 2034.

What is the forecast CAGR?
The market is expected to grow at 6.0% a year from 2026 to 2034.

What drives market growth?

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…
