Automation and Electrification Multiply Sensing Points

Every robot cell, conveyor, and assembly line uses proximity sensors for part presence, position feedback, and safety interlocks, so growth in automation directly increases the number of sensing points sold. The International Federation of Robotics expects global industrial robot installations to grow by 6% to 575,000 units in 2025, and China’s operational robot stock exceeded 2 million units in 2024.

Electric vehicles use many contactless sensors in traction motors, battery systems, and driver assistance. The IEA reported in its Global EV Outlook 2026 that global electric car sales grew by 20% in 2025 to exceed 20 million units. Carmakers increasingly ask for functional-safety certified devices under ISO 26262 for brake, pedal, and steering positions. Smartphones, earbuds, watches, and AR/VR headsets add steady high-volume demand through miniature optical sensors for wear detection and screen wake-up.

Standards and Compliance

The European Union’s Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which applies from January 20, 2027, raises conformity and documentation requirements for safety-related components used in machine control. Sensors in machinery and building systems must also meet CE marking requirements under the EMC and Low Voltage Directives, supporting demand for certified and traceable portfolios.

Trend: Smart IO-Link and Multi-Technology Sensing

Manufacturers are replacing basic on/off switches with IO-Link-enabled sensors, standardized as IEC 61131-9, that send switching counts, temperature, and health data to controllers so plants can plan maintenance before a failure stops a line. Suppliers are also combining inductive, capacitive, radar, and optical principles, and adding FMCW and radar sensing for dust, fog, or shiny surfaces. SICK announced an expansion of its industrial sensing portfolio with FMCW-based technology powered by Aeva.

Competition is shifting from catalog range toward diagnostics, ruggedness, and software integration, with demand for all-metal, washdown-rated housings in automotive and food plants and ultra-small, low-power parts for electronics.

Segment Highlights

Inductive sensors led by type in 2025 because they are the standard choice for detecting metal parts in machine tools, press lines, and automotive assembly. Capacitive sensors are projected to grow fastest because they can detect plastics, glass, powders, and liquids, which suits level detection on pharmaceutical, food, and packaging lines.

The 0 to 20 mm range held the largest share, but the segment above 40 mm is expected to grow fastest with warehouse automation and autonomous mobile robots. Digital NPN and PNP outputs led, while IO-Link and other smart interfaces are projected to grow fastest. Automotive was the largest end user, and industrial automation and robotics is expected to grow fastest.

Regional Outlook

Asia-Pacific held 37% of the market in 2025, supported by electronics, automotive, and machinery manufacturing in China, Japan, South Korea, and India, and many factories there upgrade older lines with IO-Link-ready sensors. Europe accounted for 27%. Middle East and Africa is projected to grow fastest from a smaller base, driven by petrochemical, utility, and logistics automation projects in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and South Africa, where hazardous-area approvals such as ATEX or IECEx favor certified suppliers.

Competitive Landscape and Recent Activity

The market is fragmented. KEYENCE, OMRON, SICK, Pepperl+Fuchs, ifm, Balluff, Turck, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, Rockwell Automation, Autonics, Banner Engineering, Datalogic, Baumer, and Leuze compete through broad portfolios, distribution reach, and application support. Recent developments include Aeva’s Eve 1V non-contact motion sensor in September 2025, TDK’s plan to manufacture sensors for Apple products in the United States announced in March 2026, and Vishay’s VCNL36829UM compact proximity sensor in August 2026.

Opportunities for Sensor Makers and Buyers

Smart buildings need low-power presence and occupancy sensing, opening an application area beyond factories. Bundling parameter tools, health monitoring, and predictive-maintenance software with hardware can add recurring value, and drop-in IO-Link sensors suit retrofits. Acconeer and Excelitas signed an agreement for Excelitas to sell Acconeer radar sensors globally and co-develop PIR and radar sensor fusion.

Conclusion: Intelligence Moves Into the Sensor

The proximity sensors market is evolving from simple switches to connected, diagnostic, and multi-technology devices. Suppliers that offer certified, rugged, and IO-Link-ready portfolios, backed by short lead times and application support, are best placed as the market approaches USD 9.3 billion by 2034.

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…

Plunging oil prices: curse or blessing in disguise?

The recent sudden crash of oil prices has had a major impact on the world economy, leading to many troubled faces in the international arena. The Russians fear the effects of yet another powerful hit on their economy, Venezuela seems to be considering default and the Americans are weary of the consequences for its young and emerging shale oil industry. And then you have the Middle East, where the smallest match is enough to ignite the largest fire. But are these worries really justified or…
