American buyers of large trucks and SUVs want electric driving without range anxiety, and automakers are responding with range-extended powertrains. The United States range extended electric vehicle market was valued at USD 0.03 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 24.9 billion by 2034, a forecast CAGR of 99.3% from 2026 to 2034 that reflects growth from a very small, largely pre-commercial base.

This article explains why EREVs are gaining strategic attention, which vehicle and component segments lead, how regions differ, and what automakers, suppliers, fleets, and investors should watch as launches begin.

What Makes an EREV Different

In a range-extended electric vehicle, electric motors always drive the wheels and a gasoline engine acts only as a generator. The vehicle keeps the quiet, quick feel of an EV while removing worries about towing, long trips, and limited public fast charging. That addresses the main barrier to electric full-size pickups and large SUVs.

Policy and Demand Shifts

The federal clean vehicle tax credits ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, and the U.S. EPA finalized a rule in February 2026, effective April 20, 2026, repealing federal vehicle greenhouse gas standards. NHTSA fuel economy rules remain in place. These changes reduce pressure to sell only battery-electric vehicles and support flexible powertrain choices.

Market data reflects the shift. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports battery electric vehicles reached a record 12% of light-duty sales in September 2025, then fell to 6% in the first half of 2026 versus 7% a year earlier, while hybrids hit a record 16% share in the second quarter of 2026. Ford booked a USD 19.5 billion charge as it reset its EV plans.

Trend: Large Vehicles Turn to Range Extenders

Automakers are moving large pickups and SUVs from all-battery designs to series-hybrid EREV designs. Stellantis, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Scout Motors have each confirmed U.S. programs, though several have seen delays of six to nine months or more in validating new powertrains. Hyundai said in August 2026 that its Santa Fe EREV will start production in the first half of 2027 at its Alabama plant with over 600 miles of total range and a battery less than half the size of a comparable EV.

Suppliers are building dedicated hardware. Magna launched its DHD REX drive in March 2026, ZF offers range-extender systems from 70 to 150 kW, and BorgWarner won an 800V drive-and-generator contract for EREV trucks and large SUVs starting in 2029.

Segment Highlights

SUVs and crossovers led by vehicle type in 2025 because most committed programs are SUVs, including the Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV, targeted for production in November 2026. Pickup trucks are projected to grow fastest, as the Ram 1500 REV and Ford’s next F-150 Lightning EREV target towing and long range.

Battery packs held the largest component share, while range extender units are expected to grow fastest as every EREV adds one. The 70 to 100 kWh battery class led in 2025, and the 40 to 70 kWh class is expected to grow fastest as newer programs cut cost and weight. Individual consumers were the largest end users, while commercial fleets are projected to grow fastest because they value range, fast refueling, and towing without extensive depot charging.

Regional Outlook

The South held 37% of the market in 2025, supported by high truck and SUV sales, long distances, and new plants in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, including Scout’s planned USD 2 billion facility near Columbia. The Midwest is projected to grow fastest, helped by first-to-market production and engineering in Michigan, where Stellantis plans to build the Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV and the Ram 1500 REV, and Ford plans its F-150 Lightning EREV in Dearborn.

Competitive Landscape

The market is fragmented with no clear volume leader. Participants include Stellantis, Ford, Hyundai, Genesis, Scout Motors, and Karma Automotive, with Kia’s U.S. role still to be verified. Scout’s CEO said about 87% of its reservations favor the Harvester EREV over the all-electric version, which points to customer pull. Success will depend on a reliable engine-generator system, a cost-effective battery, fast charging, and pricing close to mainstream trucks and SUVs.

Considerations for Decision-Makers

Automakers should treat launch quality as a competitive advantage, since early programs will set reliability and real-world range expectations. Suppliers can target generators, inverters, thermal systems, and software. Investors should remember that the 99.3% CAGR comes from a tiny base and depends on launch timing.

Conclusion: A Bridge Powertrain With Large Potential

The US EREV opportunity rests on pickups and large SUVs, where range and towing matter most. With incentives gone and regulations shifting, product price, range, and reliability will decide success, creating a window for suppliers and automakers that execute well.

United States Range Extended Electric Vehicle Market FAQs

What is a range extended electric vehicle?
It is a plug-in electric vehicle in which motors always drive the wheels and a gasoline engine only generates electricity to extend range.

How large is the US EREV market?
It was valued at USD 0.03 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 24.9 billion by 2034.

Why is the forecast CAGR so high?

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…
