I'm a Chief Risk Officer of a large public sector organisation/a metropolitan municipality, a position that I've occupied for 6 years. I lead a risk management function which also has a responsibility for embedding the business continuity management programme. The unit would like to grow both erm and bcm programs to progressively mature and align with strategy and assist the organisation to be risk intelligent and enable value add through achievement of objectives, sustainability and resilience.
Our main current challenges are resource constraints in terms of the available practitioners to support management embedd the two programs. The risk and bcm culture also still need to mature to a level where management independently and proactively consider and engage broader on risks and resilient strategies on all decisions being made, especially with rapid changes requiring speedily decisions to respond.
Our City is currently facing global risks like cyber/ economic stagnation resulting in high unemployment/impact of climate change resulting in huge destruction of infrastructure/socio economic issues as well as energy crises, to mention just the top 5 risks.
