Background Checks for Volunteers

Risk comes in all forms and shapes...whether it's what we can or can't say in a meeting, the hiring process, how we handle an altercation in the work place, ect. These various scenarios require us to have a certain level of understanding into how to deal with them, and one of them that I believe is critical is having an understanding of the background of the situation, and the tools to best solve the equation to lead to the best solution possible. With all of that being said, this leads me into my next train of thought...volunteers in the work place.
It's no secret that more and more, our work environment is asking us to do more work with less time, and often with no fiscal compensation. So how do we handle this increased work load? Some of us hire interns, some us stay late, some of us just say SCREW IT and drop the ball, and some of us hire volunteers. Personally, I love volunteers because

  1. Volunteers generally are brand advocates of your organization or company
  2. They're generally volunteering because they value the experience they will receive
  3. They're generous in nature and aim to help others

With all of this being said, it's pretty safe to say hiring a volunteer seems like a no brainer, I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Well....news flash....things CAN go wrong. This isn't fantasy island...this is the 21st century and not everyone is what they seem. So how do we handle these so called "too good to be true" volunteers...well one solution is a background check. Now I'm sure you're asking "Okay..that is all fine and dandy, but don't these cost money, and if we are in the position for volunteers...aren't we're kind of strapped for cash?" Well yes..a background check usually costs money, but I believe the benefits out weight the costs. Many that I have come across charge a small fee and from there, you get the information you need to really see if this person is who they say they are, and you'll have a better understanding if there are any warning signs you need to be aware of.

When it comes down to it, the person you're hiring as a volunteer will be taking on one major role that is beyond what is asked of them. They're going to be representing your organization. They will be the face of your brand, and any interaction they have with others will be representative of said brand. So picking the right person for the job is very critical to success. The way I see it, picking a good background checks service is doing a little bit of extra homework to better ensure a more successful future.

What do you guys think? Am I crazy or does this make sense? What are some ways you've found that will lower your risk and better draw your organization or brand a road map to success? Does it apply to volunteers or is it applicable to much more? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
