Duplex Stainless Steel: Properties, Grades and Engineering Applications

A practical guide to performance, grade selection and specification control

Duplex stainless steel is selected when an application needs more strength or better resistance to chloride-related damage than a conventional austenitic grade can comfortably provide. Its performance comes from a deliberately controlled mixture of ferrite and austenite. That two-phase structure can offer an attractive combination of mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and fabrication performance but only when the grade, product form and processing route are specified correctly.

What Makes Duplex Stainless Steel Different?

Unlike stainless steels whose microstructure is predominantly austenitic or ferritic, duplex grades contain substantial proportions of both phases. The balance is often described as roughly equal, but it is not a universal fixed ratio. Chemical composition, solution annealing and cooling all influence the final phase balance and, therefore, the properties of the product.

Duplex 2205 is the most widely used standard duplex grade. It is commonly specified as UNS S32205 or EN 1.4462. UNS S31803 is closely related, but its chemistry limits are not identical, so the two designations should not be substituted without checking the governing specification. Likewise, F51 and F60 are product-form designations used in ASTM A182 for forgings and should not be applied indiscriminately to every bar product.

Why Engineers Specify Duplex Grades

Higher strength

In the solution-annealed condition, duplex grades generally provide substantially higher yield strength than commonly used austenitic grades such as 304L and 316L. Depending on the design code and service conditions, that strength may permit a smaller section or lower component weight. Any reduction in section, however, must be confirmed by the responsible design engineer rather than inferred from a general comparison.

Resistance to chloride-related corrosion

Duplex stainless steels are valued for resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Their suitability still depends on the actual environment, including temperature, chloride concentration, pH, aeration, applied stress and the presence of other chemicals. No grade should be selected from its family name alone.

Useful fatigue and erosion-corrosion performance

The combination of strength and corrosion resistance can make duplex grades effective in equipment exposed to pressure, flow, vibration or cyclic loading. Performance remains application-specific, and the component geometry, surface condition, fabrication history and inspection plan all matter.

Common Duplex Families

Lean duplex. Lower-alloyed grades can provide useful strength and corrosion resistance in less severe environments, often with a different cost and nickel profile from 300-series stainless steels.

Standard duplex 2205. A widely available engineering grade offering a practical balance of strength, chloride resistance, fabricability and commercial availability.

Super duplex. Higher-alloyed grades, including 2507-type materials, are considered for more aggressive chloride service. They require tighter control of welding, heat treatment and fabrication, and their higher alloy content should be justified by the operating conditions.

Typical Applications

Duplex stainless steel is used in oil and gas equipment, pumps and valves, shafts, fasteners, chemical and petrochemical processing, heat exchangers, pressure-containing equipment, desalination systems, water treatment, marine and offshore engineering, pulp and paper processing, and pollution-control systems. In bar form, it is particularly relevant to machined components and rotating parts that need both mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

The alloy designation is only the beginning of a complete purchase specification. The applicable product standard, product form, heat-treatment condition, dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, straightness, corrosion-testing requirements and non-destructive examination should be stated explicitly. Requirements intended for plate, pipe or forgings should not be copied automatically onto bar stock.

Solution annealing and cooling must be controlled to restore the intended microstructure and limit harmful intermetallic phases. Welding procedures also need suitable heat input and filler-metal control. For critical service, acceptance criteria should be agreed before manufacture, including any ferrite measurement, corrosion testing, ultrasonic testing or surface inspection required by the governing specification.

Duplex Bars and Long Products from Aamor Inox

For buyers sourcing bar and shafting products, Aamor Inox’s duplex stainless steel range includes Duplex 2205 / EN 1.4462 in bright, peeled, hot-rolled and centreless-ground round bars, together with precision shafting and selected cold-drawn profiles. Availability of a particular grade, diameter, condition or inspection route should be confirmed against the enquiry and governing standard.

Conclusion

Duplex stainless steel can solve demanding combinations of strength and corrosion resistance, but successful service depends on more than choosing 2205 or 2507 from a grade list. The correct designation, product form, heat treatment, fabrication controls and acceptance testing must work together. A technically complete enquiry gives the manufacturer the information needed to supply material that is suitable for the intended component not merely material with a familiar grade name.
