    Hi George,

You may have already found the information you needed but I wanted to write my comments since I work managing the Operational risk for one of the institutions of the industry yo are interested in.

    From my perspective:

    1. Money Laundering and Sanctions Breach. This is one of the main concerns of the Banks nowadays as, along with the number 2, bring huge operational losses and huge reputational damage.

    2. Breach of Regulatory Standards and Duty to Client.

I hope yo find this useful.

  • Just a quick thank you for the question and the resources links.  We publish risk management apps for SMEs and we are always on the look out for risk factors.  The distinction concerning specificity and generic factors is something we wrestle with. Our approach to risk management product development is to offer a methodology to assess enterprise verticals (business functions, macro/event, KPI, market dynamics, product, customer, supply chain) that are industry agnostic... we have no domain expertise...we offer self assessment frameworks where sector expertise resides with the user.  The list of risk factors suggest assessment considerations.  Helps our users flesh out risk management strategies.

The AON and PwC surveys were most helpful.

    cheers,

  • Check whether the 2014 Risk reports  from World Economic Forum help you?

    George,

Have you looked at the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation 'Banana Skins' survey?  Done with PwC and is a good source of information on risks facing the banking industry.

  •

Thank you for your replies, James, Indranil and Tony.

Tony, I am taking a generic international viewpoint.

(If I had to be more specific I would eliminate the focus in Europe)

I am particularly looking for the list of OpRisks in Banks.

    Thank you again.

    George

PS. I understand from Indranil that the result of a survey is found at http://www.risk.

  • Hi George,

The problem with this question is that unless you take a very generic international viewpoint (the Aon Report is excellent for that) then to answer the original question depends on which country, and which industry sector the observer is in.  This will make a huge difference in terms of operational risks.  Even within the industry sector there will be a wide variation between different organisations, depending on size, geographic location, current business maturity and finanacial status, etc.

So an interesting question which is very difficult to answer unless you are looking for specific risks associated with an individual organisation or perhaps a business sector, if the observier is sitting in an analytical role with industry oversight.

    Yours,

    Tony

  • Hi George

Aon's list is not a bad starting point - see http://www.aon.com/2013GlobalRisk/2013-Global-Risk-Management-Surve...

If risk management is about decision making, are current risk management solutions irrelevant?

Now that the updated COSO and ISO risk management standards emphasize a connection to enterprise objectives and decision making, does this mean ERM and GRC solutions focused on risk registers and regulatory compliance are missing the true value of risk management? Will current risk management solutions evolve to integrate more decision support functionality or will standalone prescriptive analytics and other technology solutions take a more prominent role in enabling risk-informed…

A question related to classification of instruments between trading and banking book.

We have an interesting question from one of our members.       "We usually perform OTC FX transactions with clients backed-to-back on the market (with Banks). Now we are going to perform a FX swap (i.e. Spot + forward) JPY/EUR for the Bank account for 1 week at the longest. The purpose is to get EUR place @ CB for LCR compliance purpose (no trading purposes). Bank's Management think that this should be considered as a trading position and therefore be classified within the Bank's trading book.…

Plunging oil prices: curse or blessing in disguise?

The recent sudden crash of oil prices has had a major impact on the world economy, leading to many troubled faces in the international arena. The Russians fear the effects of yet another powerful hit on their economy, Venezuela seems to be considering default and the Americans are weary of the consequences for its young and emerging shale oil industry. And then you have the Middle East, where the smallest match is enough to ignite the largest fire. But are these worries really justified or…
