Biography of Dr. Jim Kennedy
Dr. Jim Kennedy is an internationally known information security and business continuity lecturer, consultant, and author. Described by ContinuityCentral.com as a "security expert," Kennedy is best known as an individual that can provide senior management with a clear picture of the current state of their information security or business continuity management programs and provide a strategic vision for improvement. He is candid, articulate, and knowledgeable of what it takes to make security and continuity programs successful and actionable. When people want to know if their security programs will work or are working, they turn to Dr. Kennedy.
His has written extensively on protecting the information and critical infrastructures for power utilities, seaport operations, government agencies, telecommunications carriers, pharmaceutical, and other industries. The first book that he was a co-author of was “The Black Book on Corporate Security” which was a frank discussion of what was needed by corporations to adequately provide thorough and comprehensive business continuity programs post 9/11. His second was a critique on what was wrong with the state of information security in the book entitled: “Security in a Web 2.0 World” which he co-authored along with his other colleagues from Bell Labs. Business Week said that “Security in a Web 2.0+ World co-authors explore the current systemic vulnerabilities of information systems and make a strong case for taking a rigorous standards-driven approach to designing security into products and services at the very earliest stage of their development.” Dr. Kennedy also co-authored the book entitled: “Disaster Recovery Planning: An Introduction” and authored the e-book entitled: “Corporate Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery in a New World.” In addition, he has authored over forty-five articles for numerous publications across the globe on subjects dealing with the Smart Grid security, pandemic planning, cyber threats to government and business IT operations, data loss prevention, seaport cyber security, maintaining security during mergers and protecting critical infrastructures from internal and external threats.
Dr. Kennedy has worked both as a senior manager and principal consultant for many large corporations such as AM International, Exxon, EDS, Alcatel-Lucent, and Pfizer. He has consulted for clients in the electric utility, telecom, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, transportation, and government sectors for over thirty-five years in the areas of information/cyber security, business assurance, and incident response.
He holds many master level certifications, currently sits on the Executive Advisory Board of the American Board of Information Security and Computer Forensics, is a member of the American Board of Certification in Homeland Security, and was a member of the ASIS BCM Technical Committee which developed the latest ASIS/ISO business continuity international standard: Business Continuity Management Systems: Requirements with Guidance for Use (ANSI/ASIS/BSI BCM.1-2010). “This standard, brought global experts in continuity management and contingency planning together,” says Marc Siegel, commissioner, ASIS Global Standards.
In addition to “Talking-theTalk” about security and business continuity Dr. Kennedy also has “Walked-the-Walk.” He has been involved with the recovery of several organizations that were impacted by natural disasters and has also investigated numerous information security and technology failure incidents, reviewed many infrastructure security programs for Global 500 corporations, and performed security assessments of over 50 cloud providers.
