Digital Rights Management Market: Size, Trends and Forecast to 2034

Streaming, live sports, mobile gaming and remote work all depend on one idea: content must be protected after it leaves the owner’s hands. That need is driving strong growth in the digital rights management market. The market was valued at USD 6.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 17.6 billion by 2034, a 12.2% CAGR.

What Is Digital Rights Management?

Digital rights management (DRM) covers the technologies and services that control how digital content is accessed, copied and shared. That includes video, music, games, e-books, software and business documents. In practice the DRM market spans encryption, licence servers, key management, secure players, forensic watermarking and anti-piracy services.

Growth Drivers

Live sports and premium content piracy

Live sports and new releases lose much of their value when pirated. Rights holders and leagues therefore demand stronger encryption, key management and fast takedown of illegal streams. Regulators are also paying attention:

  • The European Commission assessed its 2023 Recommendation on combating online piracy of live events in November 2025. It found no considerable reduction in live-event piracy and said it would consider further action.
  • The US Trade Representative’s Notorious Markets List, released in March 2026, focused specifically on live sports piracy.

More services, more devices

Subscription video, music, gaming, e-book and online learning services keep adding content libraries and devices. Each new service needs licence control, device checks and limits on account sharing, which increases demand for DRM licences and managed services.

Enterprise document protection

Remote work, cloud storage and generative AI tools increase the need to control documents after sharing. Enterprise DRM also helps meet privacy rules such as the GDPR. The US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the EU Copyright Directive and the GDPR all shape how DRM is built and used.

Key Trend: Multi-DRM, Forensic Watermarking and AI Anti-Piracy Converge

Streaming services now protect premium video with multi-DRM. One integration issues licences for Google Widevine, Microsoft PlayReady and Apple FairPlay, so a single encrypted file plays on almost every device.

DRM alone stops honest viewers but does not trace leaks. Vendors are therefore adding forensic watermarking, piracy monitoring and AI anti-piracy threat detection. Cloud DRM-as-a-service lets providers launch quickly without running their own licence servers. Vendors that combine DRM, watermarking and anti-piracy are better placed to win contracts from live sports broadcasters, OTT platforms and pay-TV operators, where rights holders set security conditions in their contracts.

Standards are catching up. The HbbTV Association published version 2.0.5 of its core specification on 2 March 2026, formally adding DRM and requiring devices to support at least one of PlayReady or Widevine.

Segmentation Analysis

By Component

  • Solutions held the largest share. They are the core of every deployment, covering encryption, licence servers, key management, secure players and policy engines. Common Encryption (ISO/IEC 23001-7) makes them easier to deploy across devices. Lionsgate Play Asia chose NAGRA Multi-DRM in August 2026.
  • Services are growing fastest. Providers need help integrating DRM with players, packagers, billing and identity systems, and rights holders now expect managed anti-piracy and live-event monitoring for sports and premium releases.

By Deployment Mode

  • On-premises led in 2025. Banks, governments, healthcare providers and large broadcasters with strict data residency and key control needs still run DRM servers themselves. Enterprise vendors such as Fasoo serve these customers.
  • Cloud-based DRM is the fastest-growing mode. It removes the need to run licence servers and scale for live-event peaks. Irdeto’s High-Frequency Key Cycling, announced in September 2025, is delivered through the cloud.

By Enterprise Size

  • Large enterprises led, thanks to big content catalogues, multi-country services and the strictest studio and league requirements. Vendors include Irdeto, NAGRAVISION, Verimatrix and Synamedia for streamers, and Fasoo and Seclore for corporate documents.
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises are growing fastest. Pay-as-you-go cloud DRM puts protection within reach of independent streamers, course creators and publishers. Vitrium and LockLizard focus on this group.

By Application

  • Video-on-demand is the largest application. Studios expect multi-DRM across smartphones, smart TVs and set-top boxes before they licence premium content. Axinom reports that its DRM secures live and on-demand sports, from Premier League streaming to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • Mobile gaming is the fastest-growing application. Publishers use DRM and anti-tamper tools to stop cracked apps, cheating and lost in-app revenue. Denuvo by Irdeto and DoveRunner are examples of game and app protection.
  • Mobile content and other applications complete the list.

Regional Analysis

North America held 37% share in 2025. The United States leads through major content owners, the owners of the main platform DRMs (Google, Microsoft and Apple) and many enterprise DRM vendors. Irdeto, Verimatrix, Intertrust, NAGRAVISION and EZDRM compete for large accounts.

Europe held 29% share. Germany is the largest country market, and the Commission’s anti-piracy work keeps pressure on illegal services.

Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region, driven by streaming, mobile gaming and tougher enforcement. Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation shut down the INWIPTV illegal IPTV service in October 2025. ACE helped close the AnimePlay app in Indonesia in March 2026. New streaming services in the region mostly choose cloud multi-DRM, while Japan and South Korea keep strong demand for enterprise DRM. India is the fastest-growing country market.

Competitive Landscape

The market is fragmented. The main groups are:

  • Platform DRM owners: Google, Microsoft and Apple.
  • Specialist multi-DRM and content protection vendors: Irdeto, NAGRAVISION, Verimatrix, Intertrust, Viaccess-Orca, castLabs, EZDRM, BuyDRM, Axinom and DoveRunner.
  • Enterprise document DRM providers: Fasoo, Seclore, LockLizard and Vitrium.

Success factors include studio-approved security, broad device coverage, scalability for live events and integration with watermarking and anti-piracy services.

Recent Developments

  • September 2025: Irdeto launched High-Frequency Key Cycling for Irdeto Control.
  • October 2025: Thailand shut down INWIPTV.
  • June–July 2026: Synamedia sold its Video Network business to Lumine Group, completing the sale on 1 July 2026, and now focuses on security and monetisation offers such as ContentArmor.
  • August 2026: Lionsgate Play Asia selected NAGRA Multi-DRM.

Opportunities

  1. DRM-as-a-service for small broadcasters, creators, e-learning providers and regional OTT services.
  2. Cloud TV bundles. Telcos, Cloud TV platforms and device makers are bundling security. Kaltura and Verimatrix announced a partnership combining Kaltura’s Cloud TV platform with Verimatrix’s DRM and anti-piracy capabilities.
  3. Managed anti-piracy and AI threat intelligence bring recurring revenue and tie directly to sports and studio rights.
  4. Enterprise DRM tied to AI data governance in banking, healthcare and manufacturing.
